All
the songs on "Our Own Ways" are originals with lyrics and melodies by Kim
Martinique, and music and instrumentation by Robert Folsom, the founders of
K'sapa.
The songs themselves cover a variety of styles, yet never stray
from K'sapa's sound -- from an upbeat and bluesy "Nicotine Blues,"
to a laid-back, jazz-flavored smoky ode to an on-again/off-again relationship
in New Orleans, called "The Sultry One." In between are songs sometimes thoughtful,
sometimes fun, oftentimes both. Fitting for a band whose name, K'sapa,
means "wise" in Lakota (Robert is Lakota and Choctaw).
While the album doesn't stray too far from K'sapa's live
sound, there are some extras for fans who buy the album: the addition of string
sounds that enhance, but don't get in the way; extra harmonies added by Kim;
even a solo from percussionist Gary Schroeder called "Popcan" -- he plays
a Diet Coke can with a quarter-inch of water in it! You gotta hear this!
